Do We Really Need a Christian Film Industry?

There’s been quite a kerfuffle lately surrounding the recent comments of Movieguide’s Ted Baehr (you know, the guy and the organization responsible for that Christian movie awards show that Mike wrote about) calling for Hollywood to recognize that its failing finances require a “stimulus package” consisting of the creation of more “family-friendly, uplifting and inspiring [...]

Another Disappointing Award Show

This morning I opened my inbox and had a news email telling me about the winner of the Epiphany Prize for the Most Inspiring Movie of 2008 for $100,000. I was disappointed. For the unaware (of which I was one until this morning), the Epiphany Prize is given out at the Movieguide Faith and Values Awards Gala in Beverly Hills, which is sometimes , allegedly, referred to as the Christian Oscars.

The movie that did win was an unsurprising and cliched choice.

Reading Is For Boys, Part 2

Continuing in the thought vein from part one of this topic, discussing the importance of reading in the development of boys, this post offers some additions to Jeff Robinson’s lists as posted here at the Council on Biblical Manhood & Womanhood’s blog.
I don’t remember much of what I was reading before about eleven or twelve [...]

Reading Is For Boys

Now this is what I love about blogging.  Interaction!  Community involvement!
In light of some of the bookish tendencies of this blog, J Pilgrim left a comment on a recent post that brought up a terrific question about boys and reading.  The background for this question comes from this blog post at The Council on Biblical [...]

The Dark Knight, Revisited

I got the chance to see The Dark Knight again yesterday (my father- and brother-in-law hadn’t yet seen it, so we went).  Having already enjoyed the film once, I had the chance on this viewing to appreciate and ponder some of its finer details, the foreshadowing, the glimpses at the thematic elements, and the symbolism [...]

Peculiar

Peculiar
Hello, my name is Aaron, and I’m a geek.
The word “geek” has been defined as “a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, gaming, etc.” As hard as it may be to admit it, that defines many [...]

…And the Bar Drops Lower

A British student who responded to a written question on an english test by writing an obscenity was awarded points for correct spelling and effective communication.
The chief examiner said, “It does show some very basic skills we are looking for — like conveying some meaning and some spelling.  If it had had an exclamation mark [...]

Al Gore Works Hard to Invent Global Warming

After all, the guy invented the internet, right? Now that that particular venture has taken off, he seems to be redoubling his efforts to transform global warming from a half-baked (pardon the pun) scientific scare-fest into an actual reality with his new “energy efficient” home.
According to this article from the Tennessee Center for Policy [...]

Drillbit Norris

I was listening to the radio on my way into work this morning and hearing all about Barack Obama’s one trillion(!) dollar spending plan to somehow jumpstart the economy (by taking away all our money). One little gem included solving the gas price issue by punishing the companies that are providing oil and gas. [...]

Funny: Democratic Race in 7 Minutes

Once again, I owe thanks to Jeffrey Overstreet at Looking Closer for the following funny.
It’s a hilarious, fast-paced, extremely well-produced, and detailed encapsulation of the Democratic race for the 2008 election so far, riffing on everything from LOST and 24 to Lord of the Rings. With tongue firmly in cheek, it also skewers political [...]
