It’s been 21 years since Weird Al released the movie UHF to thrilled fans and confused critics, and while it bombed on screen, it went on to have a healthy life on video, late night cable, and now DVD.
Today, years later, he’s ready for another go:
Without going into too much detail, the good folks at Cartoon Network decided that they liked me and wanted me to provide some content for them – series, features, animation, live-action… they were open to anything. So after a couple years (yes, really) of the lawyers going back and forth, we finalized a deal – now all I have to do is start making stuff!
The first thing I’m on track to do for them is, in fact, a live-action feature film.
His blog says that it probably won’t be ready to shoot until this fall, and although he won’t be the star himself (although he might play a supporting role), he sounds pretty excited about it.
Of course, there’s only one problem with this: it’s a live-action movie. On Cartoon Network. Isn’t that like having a movie called Chainsaws, Gouged Eyes, and Bald Fat Men: The Three Stooges Story on Lifetime? I know that Weird Al’s always felt a little like an animated character, but this does feel like stretching the definition just a little.
Meanwhile, I hear that Larry The Cable Guy is going to have a show on the History Channel, and I doubt it has anything to do with the history of television transmission via coaxial connections. What’s next, Joss Whedon doing a show about strong female pawn shop owners in a paranormal universe on TBN?
(Actually, never mind, I’d totally watch that.)
