New District 9 Trailer

One of the things I love about science fiction is its ability to tackle difficult or complex subjects of humanity.  Sometimes it does it in a manner that’s flashier and more fun, but the best sci-fi (yes, I’m staring angrily at you, SyFy Channel) uses the genre to explore topics that might not otherwise be explored in a serious way.  That looks like what the new film District 9 (from Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp) is all about.

Generally in the genre, aliens come to earth and invade us; some heroes fight back to defeat the aliens and save the world.  This movie takes a lot of that and flips it on it’s head.  The aliens still come.  However, instead of invading us, they get stuck here for some reason.  We gain control over them, creating a separate district for them, and referring to them as non-humans and making them into a mistreated minority.  Meanwhile, the general society (due to propaganda from the world government) has become “species-ist” (the closest word I can come up with for being racist against a separate species).
