Marcy -- While this Trek isn't the "deepest" of all the films, I would say the "soul" of it is still intact. This film continues to delve into the id/ego/superego explorations represented by the Kirk/Spock/McCoy triumvirate as well as what they each say about the human condition. Particularly on display here is the classic war going on within Spock between his human and Vulcan natures. Continued are more basic themes of revenge, loss, personal motivation, friendship, teamwork, and other things. While this film isn't as heavy-handed with its postulations on these and other topics as others have been, the meat is there.

When/if you do see the movie, be sure to stop back in an report how you think it did in this area!

You said: Star Trek has always used the sci-fi genre the way it was meant to be used... as a vehicle for exploring such deeper themes as politics, economics, religion, relationships, and the human condition, to name a few.
How do you feel the movie scored in this respect? This is the main thing holding me back from seeing the film -the fear that they've left out the true "soul" of trek.

Excellent review Aaron! I believe you captured the important points that explain the brilliance of the move. Kudos to Abrams and the rest of his team for creating the most enjoyable move I've seen in quite a long time.
