Regardless of whether they watched it or not, most people probably know that the Superbowl was last night. It was a terrific game (much less one-sided than it could have been), but as any regular viewer of the NFL’s big event knows, the real highlights are the commercials.
While this was a better year than many for ads (in my opinion), the ones that I think deserve a second look (or third, or fourth…) are the movie previews. Hollywood had its geekery out in force with new previews for Monsters Vs Aliens, Star Trek and first looks at G.I. Joe and Transformers 2, among other things.
So…here are all the film previews from the Superbowl. Check ‘em out, then get yakking in the comments. What’s your favorite, and have any of these changed your mind about movies that you did or didn’t previously want to see?
(With the exception of the G.I. Joe trailer, special thanks to our friends at Hulu for the clips; you can catch all of last night’s Superbowl ads there.)
Angels and Demons
Fast and Furious
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Land of the Lost
Monsters Vs. Aliens (as it was on television, this is in 3D if you picked up the freebie glasses from the grocery store)
Race to Witch Mountain
Star Trek
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Up
Year One
They all look like winners to me. Year One looks exceptionally funny; Jack Black and Michael Cera… good match-up.
Beware! Long comment!
For what they’re worth, here are my opinions on each.
Angels & Demons – I haven’t read The DaVinci Code or seen the movie, so I have no real interest in this movie. Looks to be an exciting thriller about a crazy world-encompassing conspiracy, though.
Fast & Furious – What? You couldn’t come up with a new, original idea? Not even a new title? Go home.
GI Joe: Rise of Cobra – I had no idea there was a GI Joe movie this close to coming out until the trailer during the SuperBowl. I will admit I’m tired of people taking the rotting corpses of 80′s franchises, dressing them in modern attire and expecting everyone to love the result just because it’s nostalgic. That said, many of those said franchises do have interesting concepts that have the potential to be great if they are treated properly. Whatever the case may be with GI Joe, it at least has Snake Eyes in it and he is the king of butt-kicking stoic martial arts heroes.
Land of the Lost – You probably shouldn’t ask me about this movie right now because I recently watched (and I use that term extremely loosely) Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, so I really don’t want to see Will Ferrell anywhere in anything any time soon. My level of contempt for this flick (what you do with a booger, appropriate) approached my own personal plateau of Starship-Troopers-Is-So-Stupid-I-Want-To-Drill-Out-My-Own-Brain-So-The-Bug-Won’t-Have-To. Oh, and Land of the Lost is another remake. Where have originality and creativity gone?
Monsters VS. Aliens – Looks like it has promise.
Race to Witch Mountain – I’m actually somewhat interested in a Disney movie. This is a strange new feeling.
Star Trek – As a fan of the even-numbered Star Trek movies (perhaps with the exception of the last movie, Nemesis), I can say that this film looks to break the cycle of odd-numbered films (perhaps with the exception of The Search for Spock) sucking all that is good and true out of the franchise.
Transformers 2 – Giant transforming robots: cool. Lots of explosions: cool. Is it too much to ask for a plot this time around? And while we’re at it, can we not make the Autobots a bunch of bumbling idiots, please?
Up – Looks fun(ny).
Year One – I have a love / hate thing with Jack Black. Sometimes I find him uproariously funny and others I just want to punch him right in the nose. The trailer for Year One made me ball my fists. Sorry, Drew, but I’ll have to disagree on this one.
