Thundercats Movie Trailer?

Thundercats LogoAssuming I have any readers left after my long Christmas hiatus, this post should be of particular interest to any who (like me) were children of the ’80’s.

I used to love the “Thundercats” cartoon when I was growing up.  If I remember correctly, I had a Thundercats lunchbox and a backpack sporting Lion-O locked in desperate battle with Mumm-Ra.  I still think the disco-riffic, seizure-inducing show opening is still one of the coolest among the classic ’80’s ‘toons, and Relient K’s song “I’m Lion-O” definitely strikes a chord with my inner child (no pun intended on that chord comment…).

So, while there’s very little news of an actual Thundercats movie on the way, this fake trailer is quite fun to watch.  Somebody with way too much time on their hands edited together a rather sweet compilation of various movie clips, combined it with audio from different “Thundercats” episodes, and spent probably about half of 2008 photoshopping each frame to make the actors from the movie clips look like Thundercats, Mumm-Ra, and the standard band of villainous mutants.

The trailer itself could very well be cooler than any actual movie that might ever come along, so enjoy.  And if you never did watch “Thundercats,” then at least have fun trying to identify the various movies that were cobbled together into this Frankensteinian creation.  At first viewing, I picked out everything from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Stargate, Planet of the Apes, and Troy to Garfield, Lord of the Rings, and Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick.

What do you think…would you go see it?

Good to have you back and blogging again. Not that I’m one to talk.

I’m torn on the movie trailer. I was never really into Thundercats, so I have no nostalgic connection – otherwise I might be more intrigued. On it’s own, it’s some good work and could make an interesting movie. Though watching people with paint on their face for even 90 minutes would get old after a bit.

Also, I’m pretty sure I saw Wolverine with face paint in that trailer as well.

You know, I think you’re right about Wolverine…

As for Thundercats…obviously I’ve got the nostalgic connection, but I’ve gone back and watched some of those classic ’80’s shows, and they haven’t aged well — Thundercats included. Along the lines of TMNT, it’s pretty high concept stuff, but TMNT is lucky that it succeeded. I doubt that a Thundercats movie would work (hence my comment about the trailer probably being cooler than any movie ever could be).

That said, I’m sure it would be done better than “a bunch of people with paint on their face.” :-D I could see a CGI movie like the recent TMNT one. That might work.

I guess I’m too young or something, I never watched Thundercats and that trailer makes no sense to me what-so-ever. Hmmm

Well done trailer, and definitely a lot of work put into it. I think I saw just a little bit from Galaxy Quest, too, and I’m sure that I saw Wolverine, just to confirm that sighting.

I saw this and had maybe a small yearning to see a real Hollywood rendition of the famous cartoon. But then I realized, that cartoon is about super hero cats. That will never work.

Aaron, what did you think about the G.I. Joe trailer?

The trailer made it look like a nice looking movie, but 30 seconds isn’t much time. I still smell a big cheeseball, but we’ll see…
