Since Paramount moved the release of the Star Trek reboot to May 8, 2009, instead of this December, news and info has been slow in coming. However, a burst of new press photos has made its way onto the web, and they’re quite fun to look at!
For those who haven’t heard much about it, J.J. Abrams, creator of Alias, Lost, and several other fun, geeky things is directing a new Star Trek movie that takes the crew back to the academy days. Along the way, we’ll get to see more of Captain Christopher Pike (played by Bruce Greenwood) as the first captain of the Enterprise.
Okay! On to the pictures…
First, we have Kirk and crew on the bridge, courtesy of MTV.
Next, from UGO is a nice cast shot. From left to right, we have Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Simon Pegg as Lt. Montgomery Scott, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, John Cho as Sulu, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura.
And, of course, Zachary Quinto as Spock, in this photo from AICN.
Here we have the villain of the piece, a Romulan by the name of Nero, played by Eric Bana. Pic from JoBlo.
In this shot from IGN, Kirk has apparently landed somewhat forcefully on some sort of ice planet.
It wouldn’t be Star Trek without space battles, and in this shot from TrekMovie, the USS Kelvin appears to be taking a beating. The site earlier reported that the Kelvin is commanded by one Captain Robau, whose first officer is named George Kirk. Interesting!
While I still have my skepticism about the project firmly intact, the presence of J.J. Abrams as well as the obvious attention to detail in design and casting has me guardedly optimistic about the whole thing. What do you think?

You know me and you know that I have always had a very mild attraction to Star Trek. (For those who don’t know, I hardly ever watched any of the Star Trek TV series, but I actually enjoyed Enterprise). J.J. has a virtually impecible track record and it’s always been the effects and action that have drawn me to sit through the Star Trek films. So, I am have to say I am looking forward to this one.
