For whatever reason, it didn't bother me while reading this book to not get every reference, but granted I really enjoy mythology and have made it a point to read up on it. I liked the fact it didn't end how I was expecting it to.

I liked how Gaiman presented the gods in this book because its very true to mythology. The gods are like humans, but they're superhuman, but they've also got the best and worst of the human traits. They don't necessarily care deeply about anyone's welfare but their own, but yet they need humans to worship them. Some are helpful, some are deadly. And Shadow of course fits perfectly with the mortal thrown onto a hero's journey by the bizarre whim of the gods.

Even though most of the gods were only mildly sympathetic, I think the character of Shadow is what really drew me into the book, because he stayed honest, and continued to actually care about other people.

BTW, I rewatched the Watchmen preview online and it was much cooler after reading the book.
