Mark Driscoll: Christ & Media

How important is being relevant?

In case you haven’t noticed here, my brand of “geekery” means a lot of things, but it all centers in some way on media, as does much of my life outside of my hobbies and interests.

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend a lecture given by Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church (more about both at Wikipedia here and here).  His topic was Christ & Media: How Important is Being Relevant? The lecture, really, was divided into three parts: Mark’s history with media, Christianity’s history with media, and an application that also involved a Q&A at the end.

I can’t say I remember when I’ve ever enjoyed a lecture more.  Hearing someone infuse my two big interests (interests that aren’t family and friends) in a thoughtful way, intertwining the two with scripture, logic, and history, was really awesome.  My favorite part was the last 15-20 minutes or so as Mark tackled the last question of the night.  If you only have time to listen to part of the lecture, make sure you catch that part.

Conversation and interaction is definitely encouraged following this one!  Thanks in advance for your thoughts on it.  (Thanks, too, to the Along the Way program with Kim Ketola for the lecture audio.)

Hey, too bad for no other comments yet, but I listened to this Friday night and it was amazing. My two favorites were, “Every church is culturally contextualized for some year in history, the only question is when they would fit in” and his discussion about the difference between true innocence and just being naive.
Much laughter, too, at the example of Sally Denimjumper…I’ve known too many of them…haha! Wonderful people, but definitely fit the description. :)
