If you haven’t heard already, movie trailers and promos on Fox will be a lot less thrilling and dramatic-sounding from now on.
Don LaFontaine, “the movie trailer guy,” was originally from Duluth, MN, but made his way out to L.A. and has since been the voice for over 5,000 movie trailers and 350,000 television commercials. He’s partly responsible for making movie trailers into an art form unto themselves. His signature phrase, “in a world…” has been used so often as to be cliche at this point.
Wikipedia has more about his life if you’re curious, but in celebration of his work, check out the video below (and many others like it across YouTube). Also, head over to Jeffrey Overstreet’s Looking Closer. He’s inviting people to post their favorite Don LaFontaine trailers, and those are a lot of fun to watch.
Finally, here is my very favorite movie trailer, and Don LaFontaine isn’t in it at all; however, he’s spoofed pretty fiercely. It’s a fun look at the world of movie trailers in the age of Don LaFontaine. We quote it with alarming frequency at the station where I work.
“A Robot Renegade Cop!”
Don’t forget the Hitchhiker’s “Movie Trailer” trailer. He’s not in it, but he’s made fun of a little bit in that also…

You know, I had honestly thought of that trailer, but for some reason disregarded it because it wasn’t Don. Good call, and thanks for sharing!
