More Movies!

I suppose all these movie-related posts could be considered cop-out posts…fake content…that sort of thing. But they’re what I’m interested in, so I guess I won’t feel badly about it! Anyway, with summer looming in the distance like a mountain range on the horizon, the Hollywood marketing machine is cranking into gear for a big sprint over the next few months.

I feel this way every year (and am frequently disappointed) but this looks to be a good summer for movies. I was looking over a list of release dates the other day. I think I’m either going to be attending a lot of matinées, or just having a busy late fall at Redbox.

  • May 2: Iron Man
  • May 16: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
  • May 22: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  • June 13: The Happening
  • June 13: The Incredible Hulk
  • June 20: Get Smart
  • June 27: WALL-E
  • June 27: Wanted (maybe…)
  • July 11: Hellboy II: The Golden Army
  • July 18: The Dark Knight
  • August 1: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
  • August 15: Star Wars: Clone Wars

There are probably others that I’m not remembering by title right now, and just missed when I was looking at ComingSoon‘s release date calendar.

All that said…on to the reason for the post today. New trailers for two of the movies on that list have just been released, and I enjoyed them both quite a bit. First, we’ve got Get Smart, which even from its teaser a while back looked hilarious. Steve Carell is nearly a dead ringer for Don Adams, and when you add in a great comedic cast (Anne Hathaway, The Rock, Alan Arkin) and a great villian (Terence Stamp — come on, it’s Lord Zod!)…well, obviously they could mess it up, but hopefully not.

(I’d love to embed this trailer, but I didn’t find it on YouTube or anything, so I guess you’ll have to click the link.)

Next up is the new Iron Man trailer. This movie is a surprise on so many levels. First, it actually looks good. Given the way Marvel movies have gone (unless you’re talking the first two X-men or Spider-man movies or the Blade films), I’d be expecting the movie to take itself way too seriously (The Hulk, Daredevil) or not seriously enough (Fantastic Four 1 & 2, Ghost Rider).

Second surprise…all this looking good comes courtesy of director Jon Favreau, who I’ve always seen as a funny guy (he was “so money” in Swingers, a great Foggy Nelson in Daredevil, and even the rich ex-boyfriend on “Friends”). Even as a director, Elf is what he’s well-known for, but even Made was a small comedy and Zathura was a moderately successful family film. He really looks like he’s got the chops for Iron Man, though, judging by the trailers.

And come on…Robert Downey, Jr.? Perfect for Tony Stark.

(Okay, WordPress is not letting me embed this video either, because it’s hosted on MySpace.  *sigh*  Just click here.)

So…who wants to go see a movie?
