Bathroom on the Right, Part 3

As we hit the halfway point in the week, I want to offer a really great one, so instead of waiting until the last day of the series, I’m offering my favorite example today!

A few years ago, Delirious came out with a pretty cool worship tune called “Rain Down.” Catchy, upbeat, easy to sing along with — except for the bridge. What the heck were they saying there? Yes, this mis-heard lyric is my own. I knew what I was hearing couldn’t possibly be right, but I had no idea what the actual words were, and it took me forever to get around to looking them up.

However, I wasn’t crazy. When I shared my misunderstanding with others, they heard it, too, and it has become a perpetual standing joke. We can’t play this song on the air without somebody referencing the fake lyrics, and it’s almost impossible to sing it in church without at least giggling a little during the bridge.

Here’s the section of the song:

Now, who else is with me in thinking that Delirious is possibly asking for (or at least lauding) a round of odd, obscure drinks known as “tuna shots?” They exist! At least that’s what one website I found while Googling told me–and even then, it was on a forum for guys looking to bulk up. “Yes, folks, you too can get huge just by regularly mixing four cans of tuna with apple juice and sucking it down fast. Tuna shots! Just suppress your gag reflex…”

Apparently, the actual lyrics for that portion of the song are “Do not shut, do not shut, do not shut the heavens.” Makes a lot more sense to me than “tuna shots,” but I still think it sounds fishy to me…

*ahem* Anyway, tomorrow’s menu, surprisingly, includes more seafood, and a rather mythological entry as well. See you then.
